In looking at the local community college schedules, we've decided that if a senior is dual enrolling, because several classes begin at 1:00 p.m., then any senior dual enrolling may leave at lunchtime, provided he/she has met all graduation requirements for our school and has my approval.  Hope this helps with scheduling for those who've been asking.

Also, the letter VGCC sent us about the proposed House budget proposals in relation to dual enrollment stated that the only registration date for VGCC would be August 12. The president of VGCC made an error; the correct date is August 13, but because it was in the letter, he had advised the Admissions staff to go ahead and register any dual enrollment student that shows up that day to register. SO...it may be to your advantage if you are planning to dual enroll to go ahead on the 12th - you may get a head start, so to speak. The admissions counselor at VGCC advised me to tell you to come in the afternoon, though, not the morning. She said there would be long waits that morning. That's up to you.  She did emphasize to tell students that if they have not completed an Application for Admission, they need to get on that.  Also, if students do not already have a 500 in Math for SAT score, they would need to take their placement test to get into a college math class. As for science classes, some (such as CHEM 151) require a SAT score of 500 in both Critical Reading and Writing on the SAT as well as a 500 in Math or they would need to take a placement test. All placement tests are done by appointment and need to be taken BEFORE they come in to register, or they might end up waiting til August 18 for the chance to register. Call the Counseling Office at VGCC for  more info (252-738-3328).

So how is dual enrollment being affected in the state's budget?

I've been on the phone with Vance-Granville Community College and Wake Technical Community College about the new dual enrollment changes that might be happening in the near future.  Wake Tech had an announcement on their website that explains it all in detail.  Here it is:

You may be aware of a proposal in the North Carolina House of Representatives budget that would eliminate funding for college transfer courses (excluding math and science) for Concurrent Enrollment (formerly Dual Enrollment) and Huskins students. As of this writing, the legislation has not been enacted. However, we wanted to make you aware of what enrollment activities would be impacted if the proposed legislation is enacted.

Please note that this legislation is still pending, however we want to make sure that you are advised of the potential impact to your course selection through the Concurrent Enrollment program. We know that you may have additional questions and want to be updated on this legislation. You may send email inquiries to concurrentenrollment@waketech.edu or you may call 919‐866‐5450. (This contact info is specifically for Wake Tech classes only.)

Wake Tech is allowing students to dual enroll right now through August 21, their last day for drop/add, so if you are planning to take a course there, you can be working on that now.

Senior countdown is on...see you August 13 at Orientation!

Onward and upward,
Mrs. Choplin
