December 2009

There's still time to apply to colleges and scholarships! Be sure to check out our Scholarships page for the latest opportunities...If you need a transcript sent to any colleges you are applying to, fill out a Transcript Request Form and get it to me as soon as possible.

Congratulations are in order! Lauren Rogers and Emily Bell have been accepted at UNC-Wilmington for fall 2010!

January 4-8, 2010, is Spirit Week and Homecoming. If your student hasn't purchased his/her ticket yet to the Homecoming High School After-Party, please encourage them to do so ($5.00 per ticket, sold during high school lunch).

ACT & SAT Testing - Still Dates Left

And don't forget to look for scholarships at these sites, on our website at http://www.ccscolts.org/collegeplanning/index.html, and in our school library!

If you check it, you'll see that anytime after January 1 is the time to be applying for financial aid. If you have not researched FAFSA deadlines and requirements, check out their website at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/before001.htm.

Reminder that our Juniors and Seniors are taking ASVAB testing for career exploration purposes on Thursday, November 19.

October 24, 2009

Anyone who took the SAT the first Saturday in October will be able to go online to collegeboard.com tomorrow and view their test scores.

Please don't forget the useful resources our library has concerning the SAT and scholarships! Check the College Planning page on our website for more info, too.

ASVAB testing is scheduled for November 19, 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. It's the battery of career exploration tests that help students make career choices (and college choices based on that). I'll have more details in the next couple of days. Just make sure they have a good night's rest and are at school 8:00 a.m. SHARP on that day. There's no way to study for this, so please don't stress over this testing - it should be fun!

Feel free to check out information at the ASVAB website: http://www.asvabprogram.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=parents.main

The College Fair field trip went very well yesterday! I collected info from every booth that would give me something, so if your child wants to look at additional materials from the fair, have him/her check in with me. Mellow Mushroom was a lot of fun and had plenty of good food!

All total, there were 30 college & universities represented (their original flyer did say 100).  Some community colleges were represented at the fair, in addition to universities. Don't forget that our community colleges are great schools for obtaining a two-year Associate's degree in a specific field or trade. Another advantage to the community college is that it is a way for students to get in the "college" arena and get their GPA's up, preparing them to transfer into a university setting, if that is an ultimate goal. Another advantage is the less expensive tuition for the first two years...;)

  • Check out Wake Technical Community College's agreement with East Carolina University, for example: http://communications.waketech.edu/news_releases/20070410-ECU-WakeTech-Agreement.pdf.
  • Louisburg College was also there. It is strictly a college-transfer type of school, but different from a community college in that students get the full, live-on-campus, take-part-in-sports-and-other-extracurricular-activities experience of a university setting. Students complete their two years there specifically with the goal of transferring to 4-year school to continue their degree.
  • Vance-Granville Community College offers college transfer programs in both Arts and Sciences (http://www.vgcc.cc.nc.us/artssciences.htm) to prepare students for continuing on bachelor's degrees in those areas.
  • And Mrs. Craft, who lives in Virginia, did point out that if you earn a AAS degree in a community college in Virginia, it is their state law that you are automatically accepted to any Virginia state college (like UVA, for example).

A note about transcripts: Most colleges want an official transcript sent from the student's high school directly to them, not to the student to send in. Please check with your college's Admissions Office about how they want the high school transcripts sent.

PASSPORTS!!

AND, HEY, does your student have his/her passport application in motion yet? For all Costa Rica participants, you need to get that ball rolling. If you go to http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_830.html, you can get lots of info, can complete the application online, and can print it out to take with you to the passport office - it saves time! The only thing there to remember is not to sign the application until you are in front of the passport officer, or you'll have to redo the whole thing! Finally, in some locations, you have to get your passport photos taken before you go to the passport office (you bring them with you), but at the Wake Forest post office, they take the photos right there at the same time you apply. Call your local post office or other approved passport office and see what you need to do.

Reminder: NRCA – College Fair – Oct. 7

We have been invited to attend a college fair hosted by North Raleigh Christian Academy in Raleigh for Oct. 7. Tentative plans now are to take the Senior & Junior classes as a field trip, including lunch afterward at a local restaurant (like Mellow Mushroom!) before returning to school.

Greetings to Parents of the Class of 2009!

Be sure to watch Crossroads' website, too, at http://www.ccscolts.org for information that will affect your senior as the year progresses. I will post college planning tips and info as I run across them.

Our school library has resources, such as a book that list hundreds of scholarship opportunities (many are available for juniors), books on SAT prep, and info about writing that college essay for the college application process. You may want to stop in and check out those resources with your child.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me or call me at (252) 431-1333, x2109. I teach computer classes on  Mondays, Weds., & Fridays, but for the most part am available on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
