  • Don’t pay any money for a “free” government grant. If you have to pay money to claim a “free” government grant, it isn’t really free. A real government agency won’t ask you to pay a processing fee for a grant that you have already been awarded — or to pay for a list of grant-making institutions. The names of agencies and foundations that award grants are available for free at any public library or on the Internet. The only official access point for all federal grant-making agencies is www.grants.gov.

Everyone Can Afford Duke!

Thanks to new financial aid initiatives from Duke University, parents whose incomes total $60,000 or less no longer have to contribute financially. In addition, student loans have been eliminated for families whose incomes total $40,000 or less, and significantly reduced for middle-class families.

How will the new Duke financial aid benefit you and your family? Here are some examples:

  • John comes from a single-parent family fand his mother earns $36,000 per year. Because his family's income is less than $40,000 per year, he would not need a student load and his mother would not need to make a parental contribution. John and his mother would owe no money after he graduates.
  • Marcus' parents are divorced. His mother makes $25,000 per year while his father earns $40,000 a year. Because his family's income is more than $60,000 per year, there would bea small parental contribution. Marcus's student loan would only be $2,000 per year.
  • Tanya's parents have a combined income of $84,000 per year. Her student loan would be $3,000 and her parents would need to contribute $4,420. After she graduates, Tanya would owe $12,000 in student loans.

Park Scholarships candidates must provide two essays, names of two recommenders, four official transcripts, and information about AP or IB courses.

Each fall, the Park Scholarships office invites most North Carolina high schools and select high schools in other states to endorse candidates for the Park Scholarship. High school counselors must endorse candidates by October.

Governor's School of NC

  • How are students nominated for the Governor's School?
The nomination process has multiple steps at the school and district levels. In individual schools, teachers, principals, and counselors nominate applicants to the local public school superintendent or private school headmaster. (If a discipline studied at the Governor's School is not offered in an individual high school, a student may request to be nominated in that discipline. All applicants must meet the criteria established for the N. C. Governor's School.) Each public school system determines which of the school nominees will be sent for final selection at the state level.

  • How are nominated students selected to attend the Governor's School?
The process differs for academic nominees and performing/visual arts nominees. All students are informed of their selection by letter in March. To ensure statewide representation of students, public school superintendents nominate two academic area students who are automatically admitted. A statewide selection committee reads all other academic applications and chooses the remaining academic students, just as college admissions' committees choose between college applicants.
Performing and visual arts students' selection is determined by audition before judges complemented by the students' applications.
  • The 2008 performing/visual art auditions will be held at Meredith College in Raleigh,
North Carolina on two separate dates:
February 2, 2008 – Art, Choral Music, and Instrumental Music
    February 9, 2008 – Dance and Drama
