Frequently Asked Questions
Can my child get into college after graduating from CCS?
Crossroads provides a high school curriculum that follows the college preparatory track that is in place in all North Carolina public schools. This track meets the minimum admission requirements (MAR) of the 17 UNC-system institutions (including colleges such as ECU, UNC-Ch, NCSU, ASU, etc.). To see what a sampling of college admissions officers have said about our school, read "What College Admissions Officers Are Saying About CCS," a collection of phone conversations with admissions officers compiled by our academic counselor.
As for our students' responsibilities for getting into the college of their choice, they must earn a competitive GPA, participate in extracurricular activities, score competitively on their college entrance tests (SAT, ACT), and work to make themselves stand out to college admissions officers. Crossroads gives them these opportunities, if they choose to take them. In cases where some students choose to take courses not in the MAR (such as Consumer Math), community college transfer programs provide another alternative to entering universities.
Is the CCS staff CPR-certified?
August 2009 : Brad Knutson, a firefighter/paramedic with the Vance County Fire Dept., recently taught his fifth Heartsaving CPR/AED course to the faculty and staff at CCS. Because of his willingness to share his knowledge and time, over 90% of the staff is now certified.

What is the school’s position on alcohol, tobacco products, and illegal drugs?
First, it must be stated that the use of any of these by school-age children is unlawful. Our student handbook states that the possession or use of any of these will result in serious disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion. The Board is committed to a drug-free environment. Science and health curricula include information about the destructiveness of alcohol, tobacco products, and illegal drugs.
While we cannot point to a specific passage that forbids use of these substances, we believe that Scripture, when considered in its totality, instructs all believers today to refrain from the use of all three.
How are primary-grade students taught to read?
Current research emphasizes the importance of a phonics-based program for beginning readers. In addition, age-appropriate literature is included which develops our students’ comprehension skills along with thinking and writing skills.
What does the middle school curriculum include?
The curriculum and instructional methods for grades 6, 7, and 8 reflect awareness of the developmental needs of early teens. Continued emphasis on basic skills in math, language arts, and science, in preparation for the challenges of high-school-level work, is vital for these grades. The school offers up-to-date instruction in high-tech science and computer labs. Physical education classes make use of playing fields and our state-of-the-art gymnasium.
The faculty makes use of teaching methods associated with a classical educational model. These include an emphasis on writing about history and literature, participating in shared inquiry discussions, and studying debate and logic.
Electives and extracurricular activities in sports, art, drama, study skills, library skills, and vocal and instrumental music are included as student interest provides enough participants.
