Service Projects

Adopt-a-Highway (Sept., Dec., Mar., May)

Senior Beta Club - Members picked up the trash on our road for Adopt-a-Highway. For each pick-up, we met in the Computer Lab at 3:15 for bags, vests, assignments, etc. from Mrs. Choplin.   Participation forms signed by parent/guardian are required to participate (these projects look good on college apps!).   In September, we were included in the state's Fall Litter Sweep campaign and received special recognition for it.

Junior Beta Club - Members picked up trash or performed cleaning tasks for the school & grounds on the same days Senior Beta did Adopt-a-Highway. They met in Room 618 after school on Wed. to get assignments.

Snacks/drinks were provided after work was done. Estimated time: 3:15 - 4:30 p.m.

Operation Christmas Child: Collected items for Operation Christmas Child from grades 6-12; worked with Senior Class as they packed items into wrapped shoeboxes collected from elementary school by the Junior Beta Club members - read more...

Salvation Army Canned Food Drive: December
Collected canned foods from all grade levels. Pizza party prizes go to the class that collects the largest number in the Upper and Lower Schools. Planned to go to Salvation Army center and help with the organization of the cans, but those plans were cancelled.

Rebuilding Hope Ministry (Overnight): March 26-27
Worked with Randolph Wilson and the Rebuilding Hope ministry on three different projects of Vance County all day Friday and half-day Saturday. Spent the night at the school, with a supper out at The Olde Place in Townsville. The Matthews family provided breakfast Saturday morning for the group.

Adopt-a-Highway - Awareness Program: May 11
"SuperFly" visited the elementary chapel in May to talk about trash and recycling. Volunteers from the Beta Clubs acted out a skit, played a game with the audience, and then visited the classrooms to pass out pencils, stickers, and tattoos sent by the North Carolina Department of Transportation's Beautification Program.

Club Donations: As voted upon when the need arose

  • Operation Christmas Child - $200 to help with shipping costs for the shoe boxes
  • Haiti Relief Fund through Samaritan's Child - $300 to go to helping the survivors of the Haiti disaster.

Fundraisers:

Candy Sale: Sept. 11-25 and March 1-5 (with Junior Beta Club) - read more...

"Guess How Many" Jars: Guess how many M & M's in a jar to win a $25 VISA gift card.

Fun Times

Seasonal Party Times: Groups brought in food and had time for fun and meetings during the holidays.

King's Dominion Education Days: Members of the Junior and Senior Beta Clubs went to King's Dominion May 14 for Education Days in May at the amusement park. 67 people went this year, including chaperones.

King's Dominion Trip - May 15, 2009

Email to parents on April 21 from Mrs. Choplin:
I spoke with a representative from King's Dominion over the break, and since we are bringing a large group, he said they would like to know how many by Friday. I am attaching a field trip form to this email, posting a copy on the school website under FORMS (a link on the home page), and sending a hard copy home with your child.  The representative said that most rides would be open (roller coasters, definitely!), but he did not have a specific list. The water park, for example, will not be open.  There will be fun scientific competitions and shows all day, too, for which I will require our Beta Club students to check out at least two events plus their main show of the day as part of their trip. The rest of the day will be up to them.  The park is open from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  We will leave as the park closes.

I am looking for chaperones for this trip, too, so if you are able to join us, please let me know on the field trip form. Depending on the number of students going, we may need drivers in addition to our bus (it holds 45). After I receive the forms and the ticket fees on Friday, I will work on the traveling plans.  Junior Beta Club members will need at least one chaperone per group; senior Beta Club members can go in groups (no one alone) but will have periodic check-in times with our group leaders.  Chaperones with the older students are welcome, though, if parents want to come.

The cost of the park ticket is $25 per person. For every 10 tickets purchased, King's Dominion will give us one free ticket. I plan on using however many free tickets we get for as many chaperones as possible (on a first-come, first-serve basis, so date your form and make sure it gets turned in quickly!) I will need the ticket fee up front for each student going, so the $25 is due by Friday, April 24.  Make any checks payable to CCS - we will send in one payment from the school for everyone.

The bus fee is due before we leave, so you can send that in by May 14 (or earlier if you choose).

Senior Division: Meeting Notes

The Senior Beta Club has met this year so far on October 1, November 7 & 25, Dec. 5, Jan. 9, and Feb. 6, meeting each month on "First Friday," our new schoolwide club meeting schedule. On First Fridays, the Upper School operates on a chapel schedule. During the regular chapel service time, all school clubs meet.

The Senior Beta Club Division includes grades 9-12.

The next Induction Ceremony is Wed., Feb. 25, 2009, at 8:15 a.m.

Service projects:

Adopt-a-Highway: All members need to turn in their parental consent forms to participate in this project. Our application to the DOT has been accepted and we are waiting for our Adopt-a-Highway sign.

Recycle Project (ongoing): Members have placed a gold and black decorated trash receptacle in the school cafetorium so that students can recycle their cans and plastic bottles. We need to check this container regularly to make sure it doesn't overflow.

Salvation Army Canned Food Drive: The Junior Beta Club headed up putting out flyers and publicity for the canned food drive, which took place Dec. 8-12, 2008. Mrs. Garriss' PreK class collected the most cans and won a pizza party in Elementary. In Upper School, Mrs. Harris' homeroom and Mrs. Thomas' 7th grade homeroom tied and won pizza parties. Thanks to all who participated! 1600 cans were collected to help those in need!

MoneyScholarships - deadline changed to Feb. 10
Two seniors from Beta Club are eligible to apply for the National Beta Club scholarship. The first two seniors in our club to complete the application and return to Mrs. Choplin will have their applications sent in. Tyler McGhee and Whitney Anderson were the two who did this.

King's Dominion - Math and Science Day on May 15, 2009

The Junior and Senior Beta Clubs will travel to King's Dominion on May 15 for a day at the park, but what makes this day special is that the park staff have lots of activities planned to help students appreciate math and science. For more info, visit King's Dominions Math and Science Day page.

Committees:

Executive Committee - This committee is researching club entrance guidelines and probationary measures at other schools to help our clubs solidify our own guidelines. Committee members are Tyler McGhee, Lauren Bell, Emily Bell, Elizabeth McAuslan, Chelsea Moody, & Lauren Rogers.

Program Committee - This committee is researching information about the state convention, to see if it is feasible for us to go. Committee members are Abby Overby, Kelly Hughes, Britney Anderson, Lee Powell, & Whitney Anderson.
